What to Look for When Hiring a Wedding Photographer
Finding the right wedding photographer isn’t just another decision to make—it’s arguably one of the most important ones!
Your next question might be, “What do I need to be looking for?” Don’t worry, I’m here to help.
Editing Style. Before inquiring, look through the photographer’s social media platforms and their website to ensure you like their editing style. Also be sure to look for consistency in their color grading. It’s important there’s an aesthetic cohesiveness throughout their wedding portfolio.
Personality. Most photographers will want to set up a meeting to get to know you before booking. This is typically called a “discovery call.” Take this time to ask them to walk you through what a wedding day with them looks like, available payment plans, and what’s included in each wedding package. Most of the time, you’ll get a good sense of whether your personalities will mesh well together. Why is this important? They’re photographing one of the most sacred days of your life, and you deserve to have someone who makes the process feel effortless and fun!
Work Ethic. This is when having some sort of reference is key. Chat with someone who’s had first-hand experience with the photographer you’re considering. This could be someone you know or even someone you reach out to on social media. Ask questions about how the photographer made them feel on the day of their wedding day. Did they seem stressed, frantic, and unprofessional? Or was it a calm and enjoyable experience? The way a photographer makes you feel will reflect in the images captured. You want to feel relaxed and confident on your big day.
There really isn’t one ultimate right or wrong answer when it comes to hiring a photographer—but there is a right answer for you. Take your time, trust your gut, and choose someone you’d love to have by your side on your wedding day.
